How to care for wool garments
Wool garments are the perfect ally to protect us from the cold during winter and they are also fashionable. However, they require special care in washing, drying and ironing to keep them looking new for years. Don't miss our tips.
If you've knitted a beautiful sweater, have wool garments for your baby, or your mother has given you a handmade cowl and you're worried about washing it for fear of damaging it, take note of these recommendations to keep them looking new for longer.
The first thing you need to know about how to care for wool garments is that they should be washed with lukewarm water and without fabric softener, either in a machine on a special program or by hand. Hot water will shrink the garment and cold water will stretch it. If you choose the hand wash option, you should never scrub. Additionally, there's a trick to preserve the original color: add a splash of vinegar to the water.
For ironing, keep in mind that the iron should be at a temperature below 110º C and it's best to iron it when it's still slightly damp.
When drying your wool clothes, you should not twist, wring, or use a dryer. We recommend spreading it out on a towel or absorbent material on a straight and flat surface and letting it air dry in the shade.
And to store it when the season ends, you just need to choose a spacious and loose spot and prevent it from getting unnecessary marks or wrinkles.
Do you still have doubts about how to care for wool garments? Here's a tip: Keep the yarn labels with a small sample of the wool you've used. On them, you'll find specific manufacturer's instructions and you can consult them when your garment is dirty.
