Article: SNOW HAT

GORRO SNOW

SNOW HAT

Our calendars are filling up with Christmas plans: going to see the Nativity scene, picking up the new tree, seeing the Christmas lights while enjoying a delicious snack... But what about our accessories? Do they match the festive plans coming up?

Today we bring you a new free pattern to make sure they do. Here's the Snow hat! A super warm hat knitted with our new Caricia Elegance yarn, which you can knit in your favorite colors to match your winter plans.

Ready? Here we go!

YOU WILL NEED

Fiber: Caricia Elegance color 005/color 006 (2 balls per hat).

Hook: 6mm

Extra: tapestry needle and pom-pom maker

HOW TO MAKE THE SNOW HAT?

STITCHES USED

sl st: slip stitch

hdc: half double crochet

CLARIFICATIONS

-        We will be working with the "false crochet" technique, which involves crocheting in such a way that the result will look like knitting.

-        We will work in rows, always chaining one at the beginning of each row (which will not count as a stitch) and turning the work.

-        Remember, throughout the entire pattern, always work slip stitches and half double crochet stitches IN THE BACK LOOP. Except for the first row, which is worked into the starting chain.

-        HDC: this stitch is similar to a slip stitch, but you yarn over before inserting the hook into the stitch. That is, yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over, and pull this last loop through the two loops on the hook.

-        This hat size is for adults, but you can make any size you want by following the chart and example at the end of the pattern. You will also find an explanatory drawing of the main piece. Read carefully and understand each step, and it will be a piece of cake!

-        The hat is made in one piece, which will be rectangular (although the elastic side will be shorter). In that piece, we will join the last row with the beginning chain, forming a "tube", which we will gather on the wider side to create the hat shape.

-        Adding a pom-pom is optional.

PATTERN

*This pattern is for a hat WITHOUT A FOLD at the bottom edge. At the end of this explanation, you will find an annex on how to make the fold.

Start by chaining 36 (or the HAT HEIGHT measurement that corresponds to your size)

R1: 24hdc-12sl st

R2: 12sl st-24hdc (always through the back loop)

As you can see, it's always the same sequence, 12sl st and 24 hdc. The only thing that changes is that if we finish the row with hdc, we start the next one also with hdc, and if we finish with the 12 sl st, we start the next one with sl st.

R3 - R90 (or the HAT WIDTH measurement that corresponds to your size. Always measure the non-elastic side): repeat this same sequence of 12sl st-24hdc.

Once you have 90 rows, you will notice that you have a rectangle/fan shape with one shorter side (the elastic sl st) and one wider side (the hdc part).

Join the last row with the starting chain using regular slip stitches, in the case of this size, making 36 sl st.

We now have a "tube" shape that is forming the hat. Without cutting the yarn and with the help of a tapestry needle, we will gather the hdc part to finish shaping the hat.

It is optional to add a pom-pom to that part to cover (or not) the gathered area.

*FOLD ANNEX: as we already mentioned, this pattern is for the color 005 hat, which does not have a fold at the bottom edge. But if you want to make a fold, you just need to add 12 more chains at the beginning, which you will then add to the slip stitches of the piece. That is, instead of making 12sl st-24hdc, you will make 24sl st-24hdc.

*Here are the measurements for making any size:

HAT HEIGHT (measurement corresponding to the starting chains, i.e., the width of the rectangle):

-        Newborn: 11.5cm

-        3-6 months: 13cm

-        6-12 months: 14cm

-        1-3 years: 15cm

-        4-10 years: 16cm

-        Teen: 19cm

-        Adult woman: 20.5cm

-        Adult man: 22cm

HAT WIDTH/HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE (measurement corresponding to the number of rows in the piece, i.e., the height of the rectangle):

-        Newborn: 34cm

-        3-6 months: 39cm

-        6-12 months: 46cm

-        1-3 years: 48cm

-        4-10 years: 50cm

-        Teen: 54cm

-        Adult woman: 58cm

-        Adult man: 60cm

To calculate how many elastic stitches (sl st) and how many non-elastic stitches (hdc) you need for each size, you just have to divide the total number of chains you made at the beginning for the HAT HEIGHT measurement by 3. Once you have that division, one part is for sl st (elastic) and the other two parts are for hdc (non-elastic).

LET'S GIVE AN EXAMPLE: you want to make a newborn hat, which you need to start with a chain that measures 11.5 cm (this is the HAT HEIGHT). You try it, and that measurement comes out to 18 chains. You divide that number by three, which is 6+6+6, so you need to make 6 sl st (elastic) and 12 hdc (non-elastic). You will make as many rows as you need for the HAT WIDTH, in this case, 34cm, which, always measuring the non-elastic side, in your case could be 51 rows. If, in addition, you want to make a fold in the elastic part, you have to add to the starting chain the same number of stitches you would make for the elastic, in this case, 6. Therefore, you would have a starting chain of 24 stitches, of which 12 would be in sl st and another 12 in hdc.

Done! You are now ready to make the Snow hat in any size you need!
