FABIO JERSEY
With this pattern, an exclusive design by Albita de Plata, you will learn how to make a top-down sweater for ANY SIZE.
Next, it will explain the steps to follow to adapt this garment to any size, and then it will explain row by row how the Fabio Sweater was made for size 0-3 months.
A top-down garment is simply one that is started from the neck down, in a single piece to which the sleeves are then added by continuing the fabric.
Shall we begin?
YOU WILL NEED:
Caricia Classic col. 064, 016, 063 (1 ball of each)
3.5 mm needle

HOW IS THE FABIO SWEATER MADE?
ABBREVIATIONS
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch
SC - Single Crochet
HDC - Half Double Crochet
INC - Increase
DEC - Decrease
INSTRUCTIONS
To make this sweater in any size other than the 0-3 months that I explain later, or even if it's the same size but you want to use a different material and needle, the measurements you need to know are the following:
- Head circumference
- Chest circumference
- Sleeve length
- Total sweater length
Once we know the measurement, we will make a chain with as many chain stitches as necessary, which measures exactly the same as the head circumference we mentioned before. It is important that these chain stitches are always a multiple of 5.
The first row will be all SC, as many as you made in the starting chain. You will crochet in the round, meaning, you close the row, chain 2 and continue in the same direction.
The second row will be 4 HDC - 1 INC. We will repeat this all the way around.
In the third row, we will make 5 HDC - 1 INC and repeat it again until the end.
We will increase one stitch in each section of repetitions, that is, in the fourth row we will make 6 HDC - 1 INC, in the fifth 7 HDC - 1 INC and so on.
We continue this series of repetitions until we reach the middle of the chest. Normally at nipple height (if the person has a large bust, you can go down a little more, and if they have very little or no bust, you can finish it a little higher). At this point, we have finished the top part of the sweater, and this is where we will separate stitches to crochet the sleeves at the end.
Do you remember the chest circumference measurement we noted down? Divide it by two, and you will have the width of the sweater body. Lay your knitted piece flat and transfer that measurement to the center of the piece. You will now have the body opening in the middle, and the sleeve openings on the sides.
Now make a row of HDC, skipping the stitches for the sleeve openings. You will now have the body opening, and you will only have to crochet in HDC, without increases, as many rows as you want for the length of the garment. At the end of the body, we can make an elastic; later, in the Fabio Sweater pattern, I explain the one I made, but there are several types of elastic, and you can make the one you like best.
Once the body is finished, we join the yarn and resume crocheting at one armhole and make the first sleeve, with as many rows in half double crochet as needed to complete the desired sleeve length. You can make a decrease every one or two rows on the inside if you want the sleeve to be tighter; if you prefer it wider, just crochet half double crochet stitches, without increasing, until the end. You can make it to your liking. Once finished, we repeat the elastic rows we made at the end of the body and crochet the second sleeve.
The sweater is now finished; as you can see, it is very easy to adapt to any size and make it to your desired measurements. Now I will give you a couple of exceptions you can implement in your pattern, and then I will explain step-by-step the 0-3 month size, where I have applied these exceptions.
- If the head circumference measurement seems too large for the neck opening of the sweater and you don't want it to have such a wide neckline, you can make it smaller, even almost fitted to the neck, by crocheting the first rows in back and forth rows, without joining, to form a small flap. You will work these back and forth rows until your last row reaches the aforementioned head circumference measurement; at that point, you can start crocheting in the round.
- If you make a tapestry design sweater, as is the case with the Fabio Sweater, you can intersperse some rows without increases in the yoke part, there's no problem. Sometimes it's very difficult to adapt a design to a row with increases, so it's fine if you do one without increases for every 7-8 rows. It won't affect the final result.
PATTERN
SIZE 0-3 MONTHS
Clarifications:
- The SC row begins with a CH that will not count as a stitch.
- The HDC rows will begin with 2 CH that will not count as a stitch.
- Stitches between * and * are repeated throughout the entire row or round.
YOKE AND BODY
All these rows are worked back and forth, meaning we will crochet in rows:
- (Color 064) 45 CH
1. (Color 064) 45 SC
2. (Color 064) *4 HDC - 1 INC*
3. (Color 064) *5 HDC - 1 INC*
4. (Color 064) *6 HDC - 1 INC*
5. (Color 064) *7 HDC - 1 INC*
6. (Color 064) *8 HDC - 1 INC*
7. (Color 063) *9 HDC - 1 INC* When you have 2 HDC left to finish the row, leave them unworked and close with a SL ST in the first stitch of this row.
From here, all rows are crocheted in the round, closing each one with a SL ST in the first stitch of the row and chaining as many stitches as necessary to begin the next one.
8. (Color 063 - 064, one stitch of each color) *10 HDC - 1 INC* - 8 HDC
9. (Color 063) *11 HDC - 1 INC* - 9 HDC
10. (Color 064) *12 HDC - 1 INC* - 9 HDC
11. (Color 016) *13 HDC - 1 INC* - 10 HDC
12. (Two stitches color 063 - 1 stitch color 016) *14 HDC - 1 INC* - 10 HDC
13. (Two stitches color 063 - 1 stitch color 016) All HDC
14. (Color 063) *15 HDC - 1 INC* - 11 HDC
15. (Two stitches color 016 - 1 stitch color 064)*16 HDC - 1 INC* - 11 HDC
16. (Two stitches color 064 - 1 stitch color 016) All HDC
17. (Color 064) *17 HDC - 1 INC* - 12 HDC
From here, we will separate the sleeves from the body. We leave 34 HDC unworked for each sleeve, 48 HDC for the front of the body, and another 48 HDC for the back.
18. - 30. (Color 064) All HDC (96 HDC)
ELASTIC
(Color 064)
Once the last row of the body (no. 30) is closed with a SL ST, turn the work, as if you were crocheting from the wrong side.
Chain 5 and make 4 SC along those CHs. Make 1 SC in the next 2 stitches of the base row (no. 30) and turn the work. Skip the two SC you just made and make 1 SC in each SC in the next 4 you find (these are the 4 stitches you made on the chain). *1 SC in back loop only in each of the next 4 stitches, 1 SC in each of the next 2 stitches (row 30), turn, skip 2 stitches, 1 SC in back loop only in each of the next 4 SC*. Repeat from * to * until the entire circumference of the bottom of the sweater has elastic. Join the end of the elastic to the beginning with a SL ST.
SLEEVES (x2)
(Color 064)
Join yarn at one of the armholes.
1. All HDC
2. All HDC, making one DEC at the end of the row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 16 rows in total.
Make an elastic in the same way as the base of the sweater but with a width of 2 SC instead of 4 SC.
FINISHING
Sew two small buttons onto the flap at the back of the neck. No need to make buttonholes, as the half double crochet stitches will serve that purpose.
Weave in ends and done!
You now have all the tools to make your Fabio Sweater, whatever the size or dimensions, with any hook and any material. Oh! and with any color design too! Unleash your creative side and make this pattern your own :)
